What is Personal Counseling?
Personal counseling provides an opportunity to talk with an objective, caring professional about your concerns or problems. It can range from informal consultation to brief psychotherapy. Counseling and psychologists can be used for handling issues ranging from personal enrichment to stress and other psychological components of academic difficulties, relationship breakups, family relationships, and other issues affecting individual functioning.
Counseling, most simply stated, is an interaction between a person who is "stuck" in some way and in need of help, and another person who is trained in helping people get "unstuck." The reasons for coming are many, and the counseling strategies employed also vary. The one constant is that the counselor or psychologist focuses all energies on trying to help the student. If you feel uncertain about whether counseling is for you, we encourage you to make an initial appointment and discuss any reservations you might have with one of our counselors or psychologist. There is no obligation to continue.
The Counseling Center staff provides short-term individual, couples, and group counseling services to help students address problems that interfere with their personal lives, the demands of college life, and their academic success. Counselors/psychologists will work with you to aide in increasing self-awareness, improving self-confidence and acceptance, enhancing your ability to cope during changes and challenges, and in improving your decision making and communication abilities.
Counselors/psychologists will help you learn strategies to replace hurtful or self-defeating thoughts, feelings, and actions with healthy, adaptive, alternatives. Such counseling is a highly individualized process focusing on specific areas of concern you and the counselor identify together.
Psychological Screenings and Assessments
Psychological screenings and assessments are used to aid the counseling process. Assessments are used to assist in the development of a personalized plan of action for counseling by identifying a student's strengths and those skills that could be further developed. Assessments are also used to gather cognitive, emotional, and behavioral information prior to a medication evaluation by our consulting psychiatrist. Counseling Center professionals do not conduct evaluations to determine disability status nor to recommend disability-related accommodations.
The Counseling Center staff are available to meet with students regarding student issues that do not require on-going counseling. For example students can request a one-time consultation appointment if they are unsure if counseling can help them or students/faculty can call to consult about a student they are concerned about if unsure how to approach the situation.
Outreach Programs and Workshops
The Counseling Center sponsors a variety of workshops and other special events throughout the academic year. The Counseling Center staff are also available to speak to various student organizations, classes, and other groups about mental health and related topics.
What is the process?
A student may see a counselor for the first time by making an appointment. Counseling sessions typically last 45 minutes and the number of sessions vary depending upon your goals.
At your first appointment, you and a counselor or psychologist will discuss the issues that led you to schedule an appointment. The counselor/psychologist will talk to you about how the Counseling Center is best able to provide the kind of help you need. When the Counseling Center is unable to provide the type of service you need or request, we will refer you to an appropriate outside agency and assist you in obtaining services there.
