12-month Optional Practical Training
12-month Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows students to gain part-time or full-time paid work experience in their degree for up to one year. To learn more about 12-month OPT click here or visit the Student Exchange Visitor Program website. Students are required to attend an OPT workshop in their final semester prior to being eligible to apply for OPT. For the OPT workshop schedule click here.
To apply for OPT, students will need to complete the OPT Student Application and prepare all of the documents listed on the 12-month OPT Application Checklist. Once the student has prepared all of the documents on the 12-month OPT Application Checklist he/she may apply by:
- Submitting the OPT Student Application and all documents on the checklist in person to the ISSO in Halladay 104. Do not submit your documents until after you have attended an OPT workshop.
- Mailing the OPT Student Application and all documents on the checklist to the ISSO to the address listed below (use this specific address, a self-addressed pre-paid return envelope required). Do not submit your documents until after you have attended an OPT workshop.
- Schedule an OPT appointment at the ISSO (no same day appointments) and submit the OPT Student Application and all documents on the checklist at the appointment
Please note that friends or family members may not attend the appointment, drop off documents, or pick up documents on behalf of the student applying.
To apply for OPT by appointment you will need to call the ISSO at 903-886-5097 to schedule an appointment once you have prepared all documents. We will not schedule same day appointments and students who arrive more than 15 minutes late for their appointment will be re-scheduled at a later date. Please have all documents signed and filled out prior to your appointment.

If you are applying for OPT by dropping off your documents you may either pick up your application once you have been notified by the ISSO that it is ready or we can mail it to you. Students will need to allow 5-10 business days to process the application. If you would like your application returned to you by mail you will be required to provide a pre-paid self-addressed return envelope or click here to set-up express mail.
