Supervision, Curriculum and Instruction, Ed.D. in Elementary Education with a Support Area in Reading Education
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a doctoral degree in Education with a major in Supervision, Curriculum, and Instruction. Within the major, students may acquire a cognate in reading education. This degree prepares graduates for careers in public and private schools, regional educational training facilities, college and university settings and research and development centers. A graduate with the Ed.D. degree should possess competencies in research methods, statistics, curriculum, instructional design, learning, instructional strategies, and effective teaching.
Application
Application for doctoral studies in the department of Curriculum and Instruction is initiated by completing the online application or contacting The Graduate School, Texas A & M University - Commerce, Commerce, TX 75429 (903-886-5161). Details regarding "Admission to Graduate School and Admission to Doctoral Degree Programs" can be found in the Doctoral Admissions Packet. The applicant must submit an application, official transcripts, official scores on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examination, and four references (2 of which must be from people who hold doctoral degrees).
Admissions
Admissions to the SCI program in this department will occur twice each year. Once in the spring semester and once in the fall semester. Applicants interested in applying must have 3 years of teaching experience, submit their resume, and attend a doctoral information session to be considered for admission. Applicants will complete a departmental writing sample during the information session. To be considered for admission to the doctoral program, applications must be completed by February 1 for possible fall admissions and October 1 for spring admissions.
Once the application is complete, the applicant must complete an interview with the core doctoral faculty to be considered for admission. When initially admitted to the doctoral program by the graduate school, students must complete a departmental orientation session, have a degree plan approved, and have a residency plan approved before being fully admitted to the program by the department. Once fully admitted to the doctoral program, the student has 12 months to identify his or her qualifying exam committee. This committee consists of one major advisor and two committee members made up of doctoral faculty within the department.
Any student wishing to take doctoral coursework in the department who has not been officially admitted into the doctoral program may get permission to take one course prior to admission. The student must get permission from the doctoral coordinator and course instructor prior to enrolling for the course.
