BIGGS, Alton L.
Mr. Biggs graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce with a BS degree in Broadfield Natural Sciences with major emphasis in Biology in 1974 and an MS degree in Biology in 1979. Alton was a science educator in Texas public schools for more than 30 years. He is president of Biggs Educational Consulting, an enterprise responsible for leading staff development in public schools, writing test items for national standardized tests including the ACT, SAT and GED, and authorship activities. Alton is coauthor of widely used biology, life science and integrated science textbooks for Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. Mr. Biggs was the founding president of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers in 1983 and in 1992 was president of the National Association of Biology Teachers. He is the only teacher in Texas to have received the National Association of Biology Teacher’s Outstanding Biology Teacher Award on two separate occasions (1982 and 1995). Alton has been elected an Honorary Member of the Science Teachers Association of Texas, Texas Association of Biology Teachers and National Association of Biology Teachers. He is a Life Member of the Texas Association of Environmental Educators and National Science Teachers Association. An avid traveler, Mr. Biggs has the distinction of having visited every continent. His wife, Louise, who also attended A&M-Commerce, is a retired art teacher. The Biggs’s have endowed a scholarship that alternates between biology and art majors. They are members of the Rayburn Society.
