Rene Castilla is the Executive Dean and Director of the South Irving Center for North Lake College. Prior to this assignment, Rene was Dean of Liberal Arts at North Lake College, and he has served as a journalism professor. His professional journalism experience includes serving as an education reporter first for KERA Channel 13 Newsroom and then for WFAA-TV Channel 8. He received his Master's degree from East Texas State University in 1973. His public service in Irving includes serving as chairman of the Arts Task Force appointed by Irving Mayor Morris Parrish, Chairman of the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee, President of the Irving Symphony Orchestra Association, Chairman of the Irving Heritage Festival International Boulevard Committee, Chairman of the Irving All America City Campaign Committee, Vice Chairman of the Irving Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Irving Rotary Club, Member of the Leon Committee of Irving Sister Cities Irving Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, Member of the Board of the Irving Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, recipient of the Irving High Spirited Citizen Award, Chairman, Ad Hoc Committee City-Wide Dialogue on Diversity in Irving and Chairman of the 2006 Irving Citizens Bond Committee Task Force.
His public service also includes seven years as a member of the Dallas Board of Education, four years as board president. He has won numerous awards from the Texas State Teachers Association for excellence in education reporting. He has also won several civic awards, including the Doers and Dreamers Award from the Dallas Real Estate Council, and the Excellence in Education Award from the Dallas Historical Society. Rene’s wife, Dr. Nancy Castilla is an English professor at North Lake College. They live in Irving and have been active members of the Las Colinas Country Club since 1998.
