Rising Star New Play Festival announces performances

Rising Star New Play Festival, now in its 12th season, announces this year’s performances.
Since 2000, Rising Star New Play festival has produced the works of emerging playwrights from across Texas. For the 2011 season, performances will be Friday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the studio theatre of the Texas A&M University Playhouse, and Monday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, located at 111 North Tennessee Street. The theatre is in the restored historic courthouse in downtown McKinney.
This year’s production represents a collaboration between the University Playhouse and producer Andrew B. Harris of McKinney. Seven short plays, including comedies and dramas, explore a wide variety of themes and subject matter.
“The audience will have a delightful and satisfying evening,” managing director Jim Tyler Anderson said.
“Texas has a long play writing tradition, with names such as Horton Foote, Preston Jones and Jack Heifner,” Andrew Harris, who also teaches playwriting and other theatre courses at University of North Texas, said. “The playwrights featured in the Rising Star New Play Festival stand on the shoulders of giants.”
“You may see their work in New York, or London some day,” Anderson said, “Rising Star New Play Festival provides a much needed showcase for playwrights and a range of opportunities for the ensemble of actors.”
For the University Playhouse performance, admission is by donation to a scholarship fund, but seating is limited, and patrons are advised to arrive early. Admission to the McKinney Performing Arts Center performance is $6.50.
