Technology Applications Certification
Tech Apps Certification is a state certification applied to either all-level or 8-12 public school education. Certification is acquired exclusively by passing the state TExES exam for Technology Applications. Certification cannot be granted or conferred by an institution. Tech Apps is considered a "secondary" certification in that it is not considered a primary teaching certification. Rather, it permits an already certified teacher to serve as an instructor in specific disciplinary areas of technology. Individuals holding primary certification may prepare for, and test for Tech Apps Certification in order to be able to teach courses in the secondary school Technology Applications curriculum. The public school Tech Apps curriculum includes Digital Graphics/Animation, Desktop Publishing, Video Technology, Multimedia, and Webmastering. This certification is not required for post-secondary instructional positions.
The first step to becoming a secondary level teacher is to become a certified teacher, either through a traditional educator preparation program or an alternative certification program. Certification plans are prepared by personnel in the Certification Office.
The Educational Technology (ETEC) Program offers a Masters Degree program in Educational Technology-Leadership. Within the ETEC program's course inventory is a set of courses designed to address the background knowledge and skills that are included on the state's Texas Apps Certification Exam. These courses are designed to assist those seeking Tech Apps Certification in preparing for the exam. Students taking these Tech Apps courses in preparation for the exam may choose to apply to the ETEC Master's Degree Program and have those courses count toward the Educational Technology-Leadership (ETLD) Master's Degree. The ETEC Program also offers a degree option for those seeking Alternative Certification that allows primary, initial certification courses to be counted as electives toward an ETEC Master's Degree.
