Bonnie Boyd Smithers has over 30 years combined nursing and teaching experience. Ms. Smithers’ educational journey began with becoming a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) and has progressed through the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
Ms. Smithers’ clinical expertise is in critical care nursing. She served twelve years in the United States Navy Nurse Corps and assisted in providing nursing care during the Gulf War at a 900 bed fleet (tent) hospital in Bahrain. During the course of her nursing career, Ms. Smithers has provided nursing care in Intensive Care, Rehabilitation, Urology, Labor and Delivery, a Pediatric Clinic, an Immunization Clinic, and many other areas. Ms. Smithers worked as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in busy neurology clinics in North Texas, Southern Oklahoma, and Maryland.
Prior to coming to Texas A&M University-Commerce, Ms. Smithers provided nursing and clinical instruction to students at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi and at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata. During the past year, Ms. Smithers has been teaching in the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Ms. Smithers considers teaching others the art and science of becoming a nurse the pinnacle of her nursing career.
