Staffers of the campus newspaper, The East Texan, were honored as was the newspaper itself at the recent convention of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. Mr. Fred Stewart is adviser to the Texan. The newspaper earned second place in Overall Excellence, second in the Newspaper Division Sweepstakes category and a first place for editorial writing.
First place honorees were Amanda Chafe, news photo, Daniel Mendenhall, feature photo, and Jared Watson, critical review.
Second place honorees were Melissa Archer, illustration; Adam Troxtell, sports feature story and sports page design; and James Bright, feature page design and page one design.
Caleb Slinkard earned a third place award for sports news story, and Bright earned a third place award for in-depth reporting.
In on-site competitions, Jessica Rush earned honorable mention for on-site news writing, and Megan Carey was honored with a second in critical review writing. Nearly 500 students from 46 colleges and universities attended the annual meeting in Kerrville, Texas. Schreiner University was the host.
Amanda Johnson, Adam Troxtell, Heather Pilkington, and Rhett Davison are interns this summer. An internship is required of all news and public relations majors in the Journalism Division.
The East Texan, the student newspaper of A&M-Commerce, will publish online this summer during June and July, continuing to cover news on campus and in the community. James Bright is editor. He will be assisted by students in the news-editorial sequence of the Division.
