Dr. Chris Beaty
Chris Beaty is the newly appointed Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Texas A&M University-Commerce (fall 2012) and will direct Jazz Ensemble I in addition to his saxophone and sax quartet teaching duties. His most recent recording project was the release (Dec. 2009) of his first solo jazz compact disc titled "Sax in Santa Fe" recorded with the Bert Dalton trio featuring a mix of original compositions and jazz standards. Dr. Beaty was a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright Scholar Grant in 2011 and was a Visiting Professor of Jazz Studies at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music in the capital city of Riga during the spring semester (January-June 2011). While in Latvia, Dr Beaty had the opportunity to perform concerts with the Riga Saxophone Quartet, Super Action Faculty Jazz Saxophone Quintet and present lectures around the country as part of the US Embassy Outreach Programs in addition to his teaching duties.
Dr. Beaty is involved with the North American Saxophone Alliance at the regional and national levels and has been featured as a performer and clinician at numerous conferences. He also recently commissioned a new saxophone duo by Toronto-based composer Nic Gotham and gave the world premiere performance, with former teacher and mentor Allen Rippe, at the 2012 World Saxophone Congress held at St. Andrews University in St. Andrews, Scotland. Throughout the region, Dr. Beaty is known for his performances in both the classical and jazz mediums.
In addition to his performing and teaching activities, he is also a frequent guest clinician, adjudicator and conductor and recently directed the Texas Region-16 honor jazz ensemble. Dr. Beaty is a native of Sacramento, Kentucky. He holds the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from Austin Peay State University, the Master of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Memphis.
In the commercial/pop genre he has performed with many artists including Lou Rawls, Trisha Yearwood, Jerry Lewis, Dianne Carrol, Bobby Rydell and shows at the Opryland Hotel/Theme Park and Kings Island Theme Park. In 1992-93 he was employed as a showband musician with Royal Caribbean and Princess cruise lines including overseas performances in Europe and Africa. He has also been a featured soloist with The Four Tops and Frankie Valli. His jazz performance credits include concerts with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Larry Elgart Orchestra, Guy Lombardo Orchestra, Bo Thorpe Orchestra, Nashville Jazz Machine, Memphis Jazz Orchestra, Lubbock Jazz Orchestra, Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, Mike Vax, Ed Soph, Bobby Shew, Marvin Stamm, Carl Fontana and many others.
As a symphonic musician he has performed concerts with the Roswell Symphony, Southwest Symphony (Hobbs, NM), Nashville Symphony, Pine Bluff, AR Symphony and has been a featured soloist with the Paducah Symphony, Amarillo Symphony, Memphis Symphony and Memphis Ballet.
