Texas A&M University-Commerce features two outstanding Jazz Ensembles: The "Mane" Attraction Jazz Ensemble (JE 1) directed by Dr. Chris Beaty, and The Blue Cat Big Band (JE 2), directed by Dr. Daniel Kelly. Performing two or three concerts each semester, including the annual "Spring Swing" swing dance, these ensembles provide opportunities for students to perform a uniquely American style of music that will further prepare them for careers in music education or performance.
The jazz ensembles perform a variety of styles associated with big band jazz, including Swing, Blues, Rock and Latin genres. Participants also learn about the style elements associated with the legendary artists of jazz (e.g. what make a Count Basie tune stylistically different from a Glenn Miller tune, etc.). The "Mane" Attraction Jazz Ensemble and The Blue Cat Big Band are both open by audition to performers of all majors. Positions are available on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, string bass (electric or acoustic), vibes, and drum set.
