Master's Degree in Counseling

Students who apply to the A&M-Commerce Graduate School for admission to the master's degree program in counseling must meet the general Graduate School admissions requirements and some specific departmental requirements. You may download application forms from the Graduate School at http://www.tamu-commerce.edu/gradschool/gradmenu/Forms.asp.

The departmental requirements include three professional reference forms and a personal statement addressing a specific question posed by the department. To be admitted to the counseling program, applications must be in to the graduate school by February 15 for summer admission, May 15 for fall admission, or September 15 for spring admission.

How to ApplyUpon receipt of all materials, the Graduate School will forward the student's application to the Department of Counseling for review. The Graduate School will initially admit students in non-degree status. After reviewing the application materials, the Department of Counseling will make a recommendation to the Graduate School regarding admission to the program.

Provisional Admission Status:

Admission to Graduate Studies (i.e., provisional admission) permits the student to enroll in graduate courses for one semester, but does not guarantee or imply full admission to the Department of Counseling master's degree program. Students may not file a degree plan while in provisional admission status.

For students NOT seeking a master's degree:

How to ApplyNon-Degree Admission Status. Students who are not seeking a degree and who hold at least a bachelor's degree may enroll in graduate courses for certification, career enhancement, or personal development. In the Department of Counseling, this would mainly apply to those who already hold a master's degree and who are seeking to meet deficiencies in the state's requirements for school counselor certification or licensure. A student in Non-Degree status may later decide to change to a degree program; however, this change requires a new application for admission to The Graduate School, and the Graduate Catalog states no more than 12 semester hours accumulated as a non-degree student may be applied to a graduate degree.
